Grout Joint Width by Tile Type: What the Standard Actually Requires
Almost every guide treats joint width as a design choice between 1/16 and 1/8 inch. The installation standard treats it as arithmetic, and the number it gives is usually wider than the one people pick.

Common practice, and a starting point only. The rule in the next table overrides anything here, and the tile manufacturer's instructions override both.

The rule the standard actually sets: three times your tile's variation
ANSI A108.02-4.3.8. Measure the variation yourself, as described below — do not assume it. Under no circumstances is a joint narrower than 1/16 in acceptable.

The question is usually asked backwards
Search for grout joint width and you will find the same discussion everywhere: 1/16 inch or 1/8 inch, narrow looks modern, wide is more forgiving, pick what suits the room. It is presented as a matter of taste.
The installation standard does not treat it as taste. It treats it as a consequence of the tile you bought, and it gives you a calculation:
The actual grout joint size shall be at least three times the actual variation of the facial dimensions of the tile supplied.
That is ANSI A108.02-4.3.8, and the standard supplies its own worked example: tile with 1/16 inch of total variation across the batch requires a minimum 3/16 inch joint. Not 1/16. Not "whatever looks right". Three times what you measure.
There is also a hard floor underneath it. Under no circumstances is a joint narrower than 1/16 inch acceptable, whatever the tile.
Why three times
It is not an arbitrary safety factor. It comes from what a grout joint is actually doing for you, which is two things at once.
It absorbs manufacturing variation. Tiles are not all the same size. Fired clay shrinks unevenly, and a pressed tile leaves the kiln within a tolerance rather than at a dimension. If your tiles vary by 1/16 inch and your joints are 1/16 inch wide, then somewhere in that floor two large tiles meet and the joint between them closes to nothing, while two small ones leave a gap twice the intended width. The grout lines stop being straight, and the eye follows a wandering line across a room with no effort at all.
It keeps adjacent tiles from touching. Tile assemblies move — thermal expansion, moisture, a slab that is still curing, a joist that deflects when someone walks across it. Where two tile edges make contact, they chip. Not immediately, and not everywhere, but they chip.
Three times the variation is the figure that lets the joint centrelines stay straight while guaranteeing the tiles never meet. Halve it and you are relying on luck across every joint in the floor.
Measuring your variation takes five minutes
This is the step that gets skipped, and it is the only one that gives you a real number.
- Open more than one box. Variation between production runs is exactly what you are looking for, and a single box may have come from one run.
- Pull out ten tiles or so.
- Measure the same dimension on every one, with a tape you trust or, better, calipers.
- Take the largest measurement minus the smallest. That difference is your variation.
Note what it is not: it is not the difference from the nominal size printed on the box. A batch of 12 inch tiles that all measure 11 7/8 inches has a variation of zero and can take a narrow joint. A batch where some are 12 inches and some are 11 7/8 has 1/8 inch of variation and needs a 3/8 inch joint. Same nominal size, wildly different answer.
Multiply your variation by three, compare it against the 1/16 inch floor, and take whichever is larger. Then round up to a spacer size you can actually buy, which is what the last column of the second table is for. Rounding down puts you back outside the standard.
Rectified, calibrated, and why the words matter
The tile-type table leans heavily on one distinction, and it is worth knowing what it means because the trade uses both words on price tags without explaining either.
Calibrated tile — also sold as pressed or non-rectified — is fired and shipped. Its edges are whatever the kiln produced, sorted into size bands. Variation is comparatively large, which is why the practical guideline lands around 3/16 inch.
Rectified tile goes through an extra step: after firing, the edges are mechanically ground to an exact dimension. Variation is small and consistent, which is what permits a 1/8 inch joint. You are paying for that grinding, and the narrow joint is what you are paying for.
For anything with a side longer than 15 inches, the standard adds a second requirement on top of the three-times rule: an average minimum of 1/8 inch for rectified tile and 3/16 inch for calibrated tile.
And there is a wrinkle worth knowing on long planks. A rectified plank can have exact facial dimensions and still be warped along its length or diagonal — elongated shapes tend to. Warpage shows up as lippage, one edge sitting proud of its neighbour, and a slightly wider joint is what stops the eye catching on it. Plenty of experienced installers put 3/16 inch joints on rectified planks for exactly this reason, even though 1/8 inch would satisfy the rule.
Sanded or unsanded is decided by the number you just worked out
Once the width is settled, the grout type follows from it rather than the other way round. For cementitious grout the TCNA line sits at 1/8 inch:
- Narrower than 1/8 inch: unsanded. Sanded grout physically will not pack into a narrow joint. The aggregate bridges the gap and leaves voids behind it.
- 1/8 inch and wider: sanded. Unsanded grout is essentially cement and pigment. In a wide joint it shrinks as it cures and then cracks.
Two cautions on top of the rule. Sand can scratch polished marble and some glass tile, so check the grout against the tile before you buy either. And many modern high-performance grouts are rated across the entire range from 1/16 to 1/2 inch, which makes the old rule less binding than it was — but only if the bag says so.
Where this leaves the aesthetic question
It does not eliminate it, it just moves it. The standard sets a floor; above that floor, the choice is yours, and a wider joint on a floor with a lot of variation is often the better-looking result rather than the compromise. Narrow joints do not read as high-end when the lines wander.
What the standard removes is the option of going below the floor because a photograph looked good. If you want 1/16 inch joints, buy tile whose variation is 1/64 inch or less and you can have them legitimately.
One last note that outranks everything on this page: the tile manufacturer's own instructions prevail. A generic industry guideline is a default for when nobody has told you otherwise. If the box specifies a joint width for that tile, that is the number, and it is also the number their warranty depends on.
What the width does to your material list
Joint width is the single biggest driver of grout quantity, ahead of tile size and well ahead of floor area. Grout volume is joint length × width × depth, so widening from 1/8 to 3/16 inch adds roughly half again to the grout on the same floor.

Common questions
Can I butt the tiles with no grout joint at all?
No. The industry position is that it is not appropriate or recommended: the tiles chip against each other as they move, and there is nowhere for grout to go, so the edges are left unsupported. Every tile assembly moves a little with temperature and moisture, and the joint is what absorbs it. The standard sets 1/16 inch as the floor under all circumstances.
How do I measure my tile's facial dimension variation?
Open more than one box, pull out ten tiles or so, and measure the same dimension on each with a tape or calipers. The variation is the largest measurement minus the smallest — not the difference from the nominal size on the box. Multiply that by three and you have the minimum joint the standard asks for.
The tile shop told me 1/16 inch. Are they wrong?
They may be, and the way to find out is to measure. 1/16 inch is the absolute floor in the standard, not a default. It only satisfies the three-times rule if your tiles vary by 1/64 inch or less across the batch, which is rectified-tile territory. On pressed tile a 1/16 inch joint will usually put the standard behind you and lippage in front of you.
Does joint width change how much grout I need?
Enormously, and more than any other input. Grout volume follows the total length of joint multiplied by its width and depth, so going from 1/8 to 3/16 inch is roughly a 50% increase in grout on the same floor. The grout calculator works it out from the real geometry.
