Tile Weight Calculator: Per Box, Per Order, and Per Square Foot
Two different questions get called tile weight. One is whether you can carry it: that is pounds per box. The other is whether your floor can carry it: that is pounds per square foot of finished assembly. This does both.

Two questions, one name
"How much does tile weigh" is asked by two different people with two different problems.
One is standing in a store aisle working out whether the order goes in the car or on a truck, and whether they can get it up a flight of stairs without a second person. That question is answered in pounds per box.
The other is looking at a floor and wondering whether putting a stone floor on it is a good idea. That question is answered in pounds per square foot of finished assembly, and it is a different number entirely — roughly double the tile on its own, once the mortar and the substrate are in it.
Most weight calculators answer the first and stop. This one does both, because the second is the one that can cost you.
Pounds per box: the number that decides the trip
Weight comes from thickness and material, not from the size of the tile. A square foot of 3/8 inch porcelain weighs about 4.7 pounds whether it arrives as one 12x12 or as thirty-six 2x2 mosaics.
Where the size does matter is in how that lands on a carton. Box coverage varies, but for the common formats:
- 12 x 24 porcelain, 15.5 sq ft a box → about 73 lb
- 24 x 24 porcelain, 16 sq ft a box → about 75 lb
- 3 x 6 ceramic subway, 12.5 sq ft a box → about 33 lb
- 6 x 24 wood-look plank, 14.55 sq ft → about 68 lb
A small bathroom floor is eight to ten boxes. At 73 pounds each that is between a quarter and a third of a ton, which is more than most cars are rated to carry with a driver in them, and considerably more than most backs are rated to carry up a staircase one box at a time. This is not a dramatic observation — it is the single most common reason a delivery gets booked late and costs more than it needed to.
Pounds per square foot: the number that decides the floor
Tile alone is only part of what you are adding. A finished floor is tile, plus the mortar bed under it, plus whatever substrate went over the subfloor:
- Tile, 3/8 in porcelain — about 4.7 lb/sq ft
- Mortar bed, floor notch — about 0.8
- 1/2 in cement board — about 2.5
That comes to roughly 8 pounds per square foot of finished floor. Over a modest 120 square foot room, 960 pounds that was not there before.
Why 10 pounds per square foot is the number to compare against
Here is the part no tile weight calculator mentions.
The IRC does not publish one set of floor joist spans. It publishes two columns for every species and grade: one assuming a dead load of 10 psf, and one assuming 20 psf. Tables R502.3.1(1) and R502.3.1(2), both at a deflection limit of L/360.
Dead load is the permanent weight of the floor itself — the joists, the subfloor, the finish. A carpeted floor sits comfortably in the 10 psf column. Add eight pounds a square foot of tile assembly and you are pushing at it.
That does not mean a tile floor needs new joists. It means the assumption your joists were sized under may no longer be the assumption you are building to, and the allowable span in the 20 psf column is shorter. If your floor was framed generously it will not matter. If it was framed to the limit, it might.
And weight is usually not what breaks a tile floor anyway. Deflection is. Tile is brittle and unforgiving of a floor that flexes underfoot, which is why the span tables carry an L/360 limit alongside the load columns, and why the tile industry commonly asks for better than that under stone. A floor can be nowhere near overloaded and still crack every grout joint in the room because it bounces.
So treat the assembly figure as a flag rather than a verdict: if it comes out high and your joists are long, that is the moment to get someone to look at the framing rather than to guess.
Thickness is doing most of the work
Material gets the attention — "porcelain is heavier than ceramic" — but the numbers say otherwise:
- 1/4 in ceramic (wall tile): about 2.6 lb/sq ft
- 3/8 in porcelain (standard floor): about 4.7
- 1/2 in natural stone: about 6.9
Porcelain is only about 20 percent denser than ceramic. Going from a 1/4 inch wall tile to a 1/2 inch stone paver is a 164 percent increase. If weight is your constraint — a wall, an upper floor, a balcony — thinner tile buys you far more than a change of material does.
This is also why large-format tile feels so much heavier than it "should". A 24 x 24 is not denser than a 12 x 12; it is usually thicker, and each piece is four times the area. One 24 x 24 porcelain tile is nearly 19 pounds on its own.
What is not in these numbers
Grout is left out. On a normal floor it is a small fraction of the total and rounding swallows it; on a mosaic with a lot of joint it is less negligible, and if that is your case, the grout calculator gives you the actual volume to weigh.
Self-levelling compound is left out too, and it should not be ignored if you are using it — reckon on roughly a pound per square foot for every 1/8 inch of depth, which on a 1/2 inch pour is four pounds a square foot, comparable to the tile itself.
And the assembly figure is what the tile job adds. It is not the dead load of your floor, which already includes the joists and the subfloor before you turn up with a pallet.
Getting the order weight right
The count on this page is deliberately the bare area with no waste in it, because the question was what it weighs rather than what to buy.
A real order is 10 to 20 percent more tile than the bare area, so a real delivery is 10 to 20 percent heavier than the figure above. If you are weighing a purchase rather than a floor, run your room through the tile calculator first, take the box count it gives you — waste allowance and all — and weigh that instead.
What this calculator assumes
- Weight is thickness times density times area. The densities are the usual nominal figures for each material: 150 lb per cubic foot for porcelain, 125 for ceramic and 165 for natural stone. A specific tile can sit either side of these.
- The order weight counts whole boxes for the bare area, with no waste allowance, because this page is answering what it weighs rather than what to buy. If you are ordering, run the area through the tile calculator first and weigh the box count it gives you.
- The mortar allowance of 0.8 lb per square foot is a floor-notch bed: roughly a 50 lb bag over 65 square feet, which is the conservative coverage this site uses for a 1/4 by 3/8 notch. A wall notch is lighter, a large-format bed with back-buttering is heavier.
- Cement board is taken at 2.0 lb per square foot for 1/4 inch and 2.5 for 1/2 inch. Published sheet weights for a 3 by 5 half-inch panel run from about 35 lb for USG Durock to about 44 for Wonderboard, which is 2.3 to 2.9 per square foot, so the figure used is mid-range rather than authoritative.
- Grout, sealer and any levelling compound are not counted. Grout is a small fraction of the total on anything but a mosaic; levelling compound is not, and if you are pouring one you should add it separately at about 1 lb per square foot for each 1/8 inch of depth.
- The assembly figure is what the tile job adds. It is not the total dead load of your floor, which also includes the joists, the subfloor and everything else already there.
Common questions
How much does a box of 12x24 tile weigh?
About 73 pounds for porcelain at the usual 3/8 inch thickness and 15.5 square feet a box. Ceramic in the same size is closer to 60. That is heavy enough that ten boxes — a small bathroom floor — is over a third of a ton, and heavy enough that most people should not be carrying them one-handed up stairs.
How much does tile weigh per square foot?
For the common thicknesses: about 4.7 lb per square foot for 3/8 inch porcelain, 3.3 for 5/16 inch ceramic, and 2.6 for 1/4 inch ceramic wall tile. Natural stone at 3/8 inch is about 5.2. Thickness matters more than material — a 1/2 inch stone paver is nearly 7.
Will my floor take a tile floor?
Weight is rarely the thing that stops you, but it is worth checking. A typical porcelain floor over 1/2 inch cement board comes to about 8 lb per square foot all in. The IRC's floor joist span tables are published in two versions, one assuming a 10 psf dead load and one assuming 20, so a tile assembly can push a floor from the first column into the second and shorten the allowable span. If your joists were sized at the limit for carpet, that is worth a look before you start.
The more common failure is stiffness rather than strength: tile cracks from deflection long before anything is overloaded, which is why the span tables also carry an L/360 deflection limit.
Does the mortar and backer board really matter?
They roughly double it. Porcelain tile alone is about 4.7 lb per square foot; add a mortar bed and half-inch cement board and you are at 8. On a 120 square foot floor that is the difference between 560 lb of tile and about 960 lb of finished floor.
Why is the order weight lower than I expected?
Because this page weighs the bare area, not the purchase. There is no waste allowance in it. A real order is 10 to 20 percent more tile, and therefore 10 to 20 percent more weight — work out the boxes on the tile calculator and weigh that number instead if you are pricing a delivery.

- The mortar allowance follows the conservative coverage figure used elsewhere on this site, taken from the published technical data for CUSTOM VersaBond and MAPEI Ultraflex: roughly 65 square feet from a 50 lb bag at a 1/4 by 3/8 notch.
