Thinset Coverage Chart: Square Feet per Bag by Trowel Notch
Coverage figures are printed as ranges for a reason, and the range moves depending on what is underneath the tile. Here are the published numbers, side by side, with the part most charts leave out.

The same trowel, three different substrates
This is the part most coverage charts leave out, and it is the usual reason a job runs short. Every row below uses a 1/4 × 3/8 in notch.

Coverage the mortar has to achieve under the tile
Not square feet per bag — the percentage of the tile back that must end up in contact with mortar. This is what the notch is chosen to deliver.

Why the trowel decides and the tile does not
The tile size in the chart above is a hint, not a rule. What actually determines how much mortar leaves the bag is the volume of the ridges you comb onto the substrate, and that is set by the notch. Move from a 1/4 inch square notch to a 1/2 inch and you roughly double the mortar over the same floor without changing a single tile.
Tile size enters the picture only because bigger, flatter, heavier tile needs more mortar underneath it to make full contact. The notch is how you deliver that. So the sequence is: pick the tile, pick the notch the tile needs, then read the coverage off the notch.
How to read a coverage chart
Every figure above is a range, and the honest answer to "which end of the range applies to me?" is that you find out on the job. Four things move it:
- Substrate flatness. A dead-flat slab uses close to the high end. A wavy floor eats mortar, because you end up burying the dips.
- Trowel angle. Held steep, a notch delivers close to its stamped volume. Held shallow, it delivers less. Schluter and CUSTOM both list the same U-notch twice, at 45 and 30 degrees, and the difference between the two is around 20%. That is the same trowel in the same hand.
- Mix consistency. A wetter mix spreads further and bonds worse. This is not a way to save money.
- Back-buttering. Not optional for most large-format tile, and it adds roughly a third to the mortar used.
When you have to commit to one number to shop with, take the low end of the range. The two failure modes are not symmetrical: an unopened bag goes back to the store, while running out with half a floor combed and a pot life of twenty minutes does not have a tidy ending.
The substrate is the variable most charts omit
This is the one worth internalising, because it is where estimates go wrong by a whole bag or three.
A 1/4 × 3/8 inch notch covers 60 to 80 square feet per 50 lb bag on bare concrete. The same notch, the same mortar, the same tile, laid over Schluter DITRA-XL, covers 35 to 45. That is not a rounding difference — it is roughly half.
The reason is mechanical rather than mysterious. An uncoupling membrane has a waffled surface, and every one of those cavities has to fill with mortar before the ridges can even begin to form the bed that carries the tile. You are filling a tray and then combing on top of it. The membrane manufacturer knows this, which is why Schluter publishes a separate figure instead of pointing at the mortar bag.
So if your floor build-up includes a membrane, the mortar chart on the bag is describing a different job from the one you are doing. Use the membrane manufacturer's figure.
Bond coats are separate purchases
The third table exists because these get lumped in with tile-setting mortar and they should not be.
Bonding the membrane down is a thin skim with a small V-notch, and it goes an enormous distance: 150 to 200 square feet per bag. If you sized this off the tile-setting figure you would buy four times what you need.
Bedding cement backer board goes the other way. The mortar's job there is to eliminate voids so the sheet cannot rock, and it goes into a full bed on a porous plywood subfloor that drinks from the mix. We plan it at about 70 square feet per bag, which is lower than the 90 the same trowel achieves under tile.
That 70 is worth flagging plainly: it is a field figure, not a published one. We have not found a manufacturer chart for it, so we are not going to print one and imply we did. If your product's bag covers this case, its number beats ours.
Two things follow. First, budget them as separate line items, because they are separate mixes on different days. Second, do not skip bedding the board. Screwing a sheet down dry is the most common cause of cracked tile along a board seam, and it is the cheapest failure in the whole assembly to avoid.
What the notch is actually for
The last table is the one that matters structurally, and it is measured in a different unit from all the others: not square feet per bag, but the percentage of the tile's back that ends up in contact with mortar once the tile is set and beaten in.
Roughly 80% is the figure commonly cited for a dry interior floor. For a shower, a wet area, an exterior deck or anything facing freeze-thaw, the requirement rises to around 95% — effectively full coverage, with no voids at the corners. A void under a corner is where a tile cracks when someone drops a pan on it, and in a wet area it is also where water sits.
Choosing a notch off a chart is a starting point. Verifying it takes two minutes:
- Comb out enough mortar for one tile.
- Set the tile and beat it in the way you intend to for the whole floor.
- Pull it straight back up and look at the back.
If the mortar has transferred across nearly the whole face, your notch is right. If there are bare patches, go up a notch size, start back-buttering, or both — and then do the test again. That pull-up test beats any table on this page, including ours, because it measures your substrate, your mortar and your hand rather than an average of somebody else's.
A word on worn trowels
Notches round off with use, and a rounded notch is smaller than the number stamped on the handle.
The failure mode here is quietly nasty, because it looks like good news at the till. A worn trowel delivers less mortar, so your coverage per bag goes up and the job appears to come in under budget. Meanwhile the contact coverage under each tile goes down, which is the number that decides whether the floor lasts. You get a cheaper job and a worse one.
If your bag counts have been drifting low against these charts and you cannot work out why, look at the edge of your trowel.
Working from this chart to a bag count
The arithmetic is straightforward once you have picked a figure: divide the area by the coverage, add a waste allowance, and round up to whole bags, because a partial bag is still a whole bag.
For a worked example — 120 square feet of 12 × 24 tile over new cement backer board, back-buttered, with the notch that size calls for — the tile side and the board side come out as two separate purchases totalling seven bags. Common questions
Why is every figure a range instead of a number?
Because coverage is not a property of the mortar alone. It depends on how flat the substrate is, how steeply you hold the trowel, how wet you mixed the batch, and whether you are back-buttering. The manufacturers publish ranges because a single number would be wrong for most jobs. When you need one number to shop with, take the low end.
Which notch should I use?
Bigger and flatter tile needs a bigger notch, and the table above is the usual starting point. But the notch is a means, not the goal: what matters is the contact coverage in the last table. Set a tile, pull it straight back up, and look at the back. If the mortar has not transferred across nearly the whole face, go up a notch, start back-buttering, or both.
My bag says something different. Who wins?
Your bag, every time. These are the figures for three widely sold products; there are dozens more, and the coverage moves between product lines from the same manufacturer. The chart on the bag in your hand describes the mortar you actually bought.
Does a worn trowel change the numbers?
Yes, and more than people expect. Notches round off with use, and a rounded notch delivers less mortar than its stamped size — so coverage per bag goes up while contact coverage under the tile goes down, which is the bad direction. A trowel is cheap relative to lifting a hollow floor.
