Tile Edge Trim and Profile Sizes: Which Height Fits Your Tile
The size on the box is not your tile thickness. A profile sits in the bond coat under the tile, so its height has to cover the tile plus the mortar — which is why so many people open the box and find the trim sitting proud.

Which height to buy for your tile
Allowing roughly 1/8 in for the bond coat, which is a trade rule of thumb rather than a published figure. Measure your tile — do not trust the nominal thickness on the carton.

What each profile shape is for
Descriptions as given by the manufacturer. Shape is a separate decision from height: pick the look first, then the height that fits your tile.

The mistake this page exists to prevent
Someone measures their tile at 3/8 of an inch, buys 3/8 inch trim, installs it, and the tile edge finishes a sixteenth or so above the profile. The trim now looks like a mistake instead of a detail, and the tile edge it was supposed to protect is the highest thing on the wall.
Nothing was measured wrong. The profile height was matched to the wrong dimension.
An edge profile is not a cap that slides onto a finished tile. It has a perforated anchoring leg that is buried in the mortar bond coat underneath the tile, and the visible section stands up alongside the tile's edge. So the height it has to cover is not the tile — it is the tile plus everything under the tile.
That is what the manufacturer means when it says profile size is based on the thickness of the tile and the amount of setting material used to set it. The second half of that sentence is the half people skip.
How much to allow for the bond coat
Here is where this page has to be straight with you: there is no published number.
The trade rule of thumb, and the consistent advice from installers, is to allow about 1/8 inch for the bond coat and pick the next profile height up from the total. That is the allowance the second table above is built on, and it is a rule of thumb rather than a specification. We are not going to dress it up as one.
Two things move it:
- A flat substrate uses less. On dead-flat backer board with a small notch you may be nearer 3/32 inch.
- A wavy substrate uses more. If you are burying dips, the bed under the tile is thicker in places, and the tile surface rises with it. This is why the installers' version of the rule has a second clause: if the wall is out of flat, go up another size.
The failure is asymmetric, which decides the tie. A profile that finishes a shade proud of the tile reads as a deliberate reveal — plenty of installations are specified that way on purpose. A profile that finishes below the tile reads as a botch and leaves the edge exposed. When you are between two sizes, go up.
Measure the tile, not the carton
Nominal thickness is unreliable in both directions, and porcelain is the worst offender because the same nominal product varies between production runs.
Measure the edge of an actual tile with calipers if you have them. While you are at it, measure two or three from different boxes, because if the thickness varies then your profile has to clear the thickest one.
The inch sizes are conversions, and that is a trap
Look at the first table again, specifically the third column.
These profiles are manufactured to metric dimensions and labelled in inches for the North American market. The labels are rounded, and not always in the same direction:
- 12.5 mm is sold as 1/2 inch. It is 0.492 inch.
- 11 mm is sold as 7/16 inch. It is 0.433 inch.
- 9 mm is sold as 11/32 inch. It is 0.354 inch.
- 15 mm is sold as 9/16 inch. It is 0.591 inch.
Individually these gaps are trivial. They stop being trivial when you stack them: a "1/2 inch" profile over a "3/8 inch" tile with a 1/8 inch bond coat looks like it should come out exactly flush in fractions, and in millimetres it is 12.5 against roughly 12.7. It will be fine, but you cannot reason about the last sixteenth of an inch using labels that were rounded before you started.
If you are working close to the limit, do the arithmetic in millimetres. The catalogue is metric underneath, so the numbers stop fighting you.
Height and shape are two separate decisions
It is easy to conflate them because you buy them as one product code, but they answer different questions.
Shape is the aesthetic call, and it is genuinely a matter of taste. A rounded reveal is the modern substitute for a bullnose tile and the safest default. A squared reveal gives a crisper, more contemporary edge. A minimalist profile is for when you want the trim to vanish. A recessed groove gives you a shadow gap. Outside corners have their own profiles with plug-in corner pieces, which are worth using rather than mitring two lengths and hoping.
Height is arithmetic, and the tables above settle it.
One practical detail while you are choosing: some profiles have an integrated joint spacer, a small ridge that sets a consistent grout joint between the tile and the trim. It is a genuine convenience, because that joint is as visible as any other on the wall and it is easy to close up by accident when you are pressing tile against metal. Not every variant has it — stainless steel versions often do not, in at least one direction — so check if it matters to you.
When your tile is too thick for the range
The last row of the second table is the honest one, and it is the answer to a question people ask a lot.
The wall-edge profile range tops out at 9/16 inch. A 1/2 inch tile with a bond coat under it needs something over 5/8 inch, and no amount of wishing makes the 9/16 fit. Thick porcelain, dimensioned stone and paver-type tile are served by different profile families — stair nosings, transition profiles and floor-edge sections — with their own height ladders.
The right move there is to take your measured thickness to the manufacturer's profile selector rather than buying the nearest edge trim and discovering the problem on the wall.
Ordering: work in lengths, not linear feet
Profiles come in two stock lengths: 2.5 m, which is 8 ft 2-1/2 in, and 3.0 m, which is a clean 10 ft.
That matters more than it sounds. Trim is bought in sticks, so a 9 ft run needs a 10 ft length and you carry the offcut, while two 4 ft runs come comfortably out of one 8 ft 2-1/2 in stick with a joint you can place where nobody looks. Work out your runs first, then decide which length to buy — and buy a spare stick, because a mis-cut on the last piece of metal trim is a second trip.
Before any of that, settle the tile. The tile calculator gives you the layout and the cuts, which is what tells you where the exposed edges actually fall. Common questions
Why does the trim stand proud of my tile?
Almost always because the height was matched to the tile thickness alone. The profile's anchoring leg sits in the mortar bond coat underneath the tile, so the finished tile surface ends up a bond coat higher than the tile's own thickness. Match the height to tile plus mortar, not to tile.
What if I am between two sizes?
Go up, not down. A profile very slightly taller than the tile surface reads as a deliberate edge, and you can bed the tile a touch fuller to close the difference. A profile that is too short leaves the tile edge standing above the trim, which is the one result that looks like a mistake and also leaves the edge unprotected.
Are the inch sizes real or converted?
Converted, and loosely. These profiles are made to metric dimensions and labelled in inches for the North American market, so 12.5 mm is sold as 1/2 inch when it is really 0.492 inch, and 9 mm is sold as 11/32 inch when it is 0.354. The differences are small individually, but if you are stacking a tile thickness and a bond coat and reasoning in sixteenths, work in millimetres instead and the arithmetic stops fighting you.
My tile is 1/2 inch thick. What do I use?
Not a wall-edge profile from the table above — with a bond coat you need something over 5/8 inch and the range stops at 9/16. Thick porcelain, stone, and paver-type tile are served by different profile families, and by stair-nosing and transition profiles rather than edge trims. Take your measured thickness to the manufacturer's profile selector rather than forcing the nearest edge trim.
